Sugar, spice and everything nice - that sums the plot of Cardamom - the theatre production that has rocked 4 full house shows last year and is back by popular demand. Without giving too much away, The Stylish Dish believes we have cracked the code on what makes this show a favourite for all ages.

The Kumars discover that chai time with the in-laws, needs to come with a guide
Capturing the big fat Indian wedding in all it's hues, Cardamom sets the scene way before the big day. The play centres around the interactions between the families of the bride and groom, oscillating from awkward to intense, delivered in comical dialogues and situations. Written and directed by Hasnain Shaikh, an actor and stand-up comedian, the script he says was inspired by " a storm of influences" on how wedding films were shot.

Hasnain plays Rishi, the witty younger sibling
Each scene is rounded up by the character delivering their thoughts to the audience, giving it a mockumentary feel similar to 'The Office' and other popular reality shows. The play displays the effortless dynamics between the characters, from petty matters brewing between the mother-in-laws to sibling rivalry and love, but most importantly the bride and groom viewing each other no longer through rose-tinted glasses.

Dr. Zufia Shaikh as Abha delivering her pearls of wisdom on weddings and life
The play is produced by BSSD (Bangalore School of Speech and Drama), a popular theatre school for children, which is now including theatre for grown ups with regular workshops. Putting Bangalore on the theatre map since 2002, the school hosts regular examinations for the prestigious Trinity certification. Founder, Dr. Zulfia Shaikh plays Abha, mother of the bride - an overtly emotional yet caring mother, who believes life is but a Bollywood movie, and she is the star. Dr. Zulfia believes the reason for Cardamom's success, is the overwhelming response by the audience who felt they could relate and laugh at the characters and situations. Forget watching a Bollywood movie this weekend, here is your chance to see it live!
