When fashion and art meet on a canvas

LV, YSL, Hermès, Fendi, Chloé & Céline - Bag Envy The Lust List
Sketching in the world of fashion has a special place in history, as the coveted front row seats were taken by master artists. For the few seconds it took a model to walk down the runway, the artist had to sketch a piece that captured every swish and swirl, creating an artwork that was more spectacular than the dress itself. From Léon Benigni who entranced with his Nina Ricci creations to Carl Erickson's famed black and white sketch of the Chanel fur cape coat; some artists were couturiers, as fitting clothes could help predict the movement of the dress.
Today, this art is being kept alive by a select few and The Stylish Dish got in touch with the fashion illustrators making headlines not just because they have an eye for design, but art at their fingertips.
Megan Hess You might recognize a not-so-little tv-sitcom by the name of Sex and The City, which started out as the New York Times best-selling book by Candace Bushnell. A 3am phone call from Candace's team gave Megan the opportunity to illustrate book covers for the famous author, putting her work in the spotlight. Her illustrations have clean lines, with effortless swirls and bold colour; from food to fashion her portraits cover clients such as Cartier, Rolex, Prada and even Michelle Obama.

Limzy Adorning her creations with delicate flower petals, Limzy says she pays ode to the true creator of art - Mother Nature. If you are wondering where this child-like curiosity sparked from, Limzy shares a major influence was her experience as an art teacher, amidst children who were bubbling with creative. Needless to say, her art work is simply gorgeous with a minimalist feel as roses and chrysanthemums grace water-colour figurines and jewel-toned orchids take on swirling dance illustrations.

The Lust List Think those Jimmy Choo shoes are too expensive? Frame them! Founder Sally Spratt created The Lust List which illustrates luxury collections. Starting out as a creative project, one of her initial pieces was a painting to her boyfriend, illustrating all his favorite things. As work picked up, Sally set out to conquer the fashion world one brush stroke at a time. Whether its painting dainty shoes with intricacy or bags with faded textures, every piece of art is a collectible. Jetting off to Paris for inspiration, her delicate paintings have us dreaming of tropical palms, Moët & Chandon champagne and gilded Louis Vuitton luggage.

Gretchen Röehrs This is proof that doodling does get you somewhere - lunch time turned creative when Gretchen had an idea to decorate her doodles with food and an artist was born. Her tagline is 'playing with food' with broccoli florets made into puffy sleeves to banana skins folded to look like jumpsuits making her creations look delicious enough to eat. Giving food photography an all new league, there are few other artists to have also dabbled in this arena, but none can do so with panache like Gretchen.
